Zusa’s Carbon Offset Projects
Zusa’s Carbon Offset Projects
Now that Zusa is officially a carbon-neutral corporate apparel brand (Hooray!), the custom clothing brand is about to take some exciting steps forward. The data collection, planning, and carbon-neutral infrastructure are in place for the brand, and now it’s time for action. Through its carbon-neutral partner organization, Climate Neutral, Zusa will begin work to compensate for its output carbon emissions!
How Do You Offset Carbon?
So, how exactly does a company take action to reduce carbon from the atmosphere? Through an organization like Climate Neutral, a business purchases something called carbon credits. Carbon credits are certificates that verify actions a company has taken to eliminate or avoid carbon emissions. Carbon credits are verified by a third party to ensure total transparency! As an organization, Climate Neutral relies on a strong third-party verification system and goes above and beyond to ensure the quality of the carbon offset projects their partner companies choose.
To go a little more in-depth, we’ll share an example. If Company A produces 70,000 tonnes of carbon, Company A will have to purchase 70,000 carbon credits to be carbon-neutral. These 70,000 credits will be split up and used to support various carbon-eliminating projects. These projects vary greatly, from reforestation to building hydropower infrastructure. Climate Neutral states that carbon credits will cost approximately 0.5%–1% of each company’s annual revenue. A low cost for saving the world, don’t you think?
Climate Neutral always encourages partner companies like Zusa to purchase a diverse selection of carbon-eliminating projects to create a strong portfolio. It’s a great opportunity for companies to learn about the various carbon-eliminating projects that exist and to support multiple people groups in countries all over the world. After all, the ultimate goal of carbon elimination is to preserve the earth for the people who live on it. Stable ecosystems, protection from extreme heat events, and safe water are things that everyone deserves, and also ones that many of us take for granted every day.
Zusa’s Carbon-Eliminating Projects
We’ve talked a lot about Zusa’s certification as a carbon-neutral corporate apparel business. Now, let’s dive into the actual carbon-eliminating projects Zusa will be funding with its carbon credits! Carbon offset projects range from US-based projects to international efforts with extraordinary reach. Zusa hopes that these projects will make a big difference, not only in the current climate crisis but in the communities where these projects are located.
Carbon-Eliminating Project 1: Avoided Deforestation in Brazil
The first carbon offset project Zusa will support is all the way in Brazil! Because of its rich plant and animal life, this specific stretch of forests that connects the Andes to the Amazon needs to be protected. By safeguarding the 158 tree species, this project will protect more than 400 bird species.
It also aims to reinforce the local economy in Brazil, specifically supporting an area that struggles with poverty. By protecting this stretch of forest and replanting Mahogany trees, this carbon-eliminating project will directly remove carbon from the atmosphere. Protecting biodiversity also ensures a stable and healthy ecosystem!
Carbon-Eliminating Project 2: Renewable Energy in the US
The second carbon-eliminating project Zusa will support is a bit closer to home for the brand! Located in Cheyenne, Oklahoma, the Dempsey Ridge Wind Project was created to generate wind energy! By using renewable energy sources like wind, we reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. The Dempsey Ridge Wind Project is located on a farm that has 66 wind turbines, and it generates enough energy to power about 46,000 homes per year!
This much renewable energy reduces approximately 225,000 metric tons of carbon in the atmosphere per year! Projects like this one help to decrease our reliance on fossil fuel energy, which emits large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere.
Carbon-Eliminating Project 3: Landfill Gas in China
Zusa’s third partner carbon offset project is the Haicheng Landfill Gas Project, which aims to reduce methane emissions from a landfill site in China to prevent them from entering the atmosphere. Methane emissions are a type of greenhouse gas that’s 30 times stronger than carbon dioxide. Landfills are a massive contributor to methane emissions. This project will collect methane gas from landfills, and experts expect it to generate 16,000 MWh of energy! Overall, this project will likely reduce 80,000t of greenhouse gas emissions a year! Zusa is thrilled to be a part of something so amazing all the way across the globe.
