Ethically Sourced Corporate Apparel

Company Apparel from WRAP-Certified Facilities

Fast fashion is an industry that seems to grow no matter how many voices oppose it. The truth is that the convenience and low cost of cheaply made clothing are enough to keep consumers coming back. But when ordering discounted clothing online or sifting through clearance bins, it’s easy to forget that fast fashion has an extremely high cost. In the corporate apparel and gifting world, this is no different—when spending company money rather than your own, you might be less likely to stop and think about the production history of your company gift.

Factory Conditions for Garment Workers

By exploiting factory workers, textile manufacturers are able to make a profit off of cheap products. Even in an age that values transparency, many companies pay their workers less than the minimum legal salary. In some countries where manufacturing is a massive industry, the minimum wage they’re paying factory workers isn’t enough to actually support them. In fact, the minimum wage (which isn’t always guaranteed to all workers) is only a fifth of that country’s living wage, which is what it actually costs to afford rent, food, healthcare, etc. Even in the US, Los Angeles garment workers can work 60-70 hours per week and earn only $300.

The conditions most garment workers experience are harsh and unpleasant, including unventilated workspaces, contact with toxic materials, fiber dust in the air, and 10 to18 hour workdays. In unsafe factory buildings, there are little to no protection measures against fires, accidents, and spreading illnesses. Many workers, especially women, also face verbal and even physical abuse. Workers can even be denied water and breaks.

WRAP Certifications to Protect Garment Workers

Because of recent widespread interest in corporate social responsibility, many companies are refusing to accept these unjust conditions for garment workers. Organizations exist to ensure the fair pay and treatment of garment workers around the world. By partnering with factories, these organizations create regulations and certify that they’re being upheld. For instance, WRAP, which stands for “Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production,” is an organization that helps brands make sure their garment factories are treating their garment workers with fairness and respect.

WRAP is the largest factory safety and fairness certification program in the world. The organization uses a more collaborative approach to certification than a simple audit. WRAP works with factories to ensure that they take responsibility for completing the certification process. Factories must then uphold WRAP’s 12 Principles, which guide human resources, environmental practices, legal compliance, health and safety, and security standards.
