How to Welcome Transfers to Your Office
In July 2022, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on the Great Resignation, saying that job quitting in the U.S. had reached record highs since the surveys began in 2000. According to the BLS, “pandemic-related factors” may have played a role, including “changing attitudes toward work.”
As employees switch careers, relocate for new jobs, and go through other work-life changes, wellness becomes a priority. On top of that, health is at the forefront of everyone’s mind following the pandemic.
From introductions to employee transfer gifts, here’s how to make transfers feel welcome, whether they’re working in-office or remotely.

Prepare for Their Arrival
Making a good impression on a new team member begins with prepping for their arrival. Here are a few ideas:
- Make an announcement to your workplace via email.
- Ask everyone to introduce themselves on the employee’s first day.
- Outfit the workspace (physical or virtual) with everything the employee will need to get started.
- Double-check that their equipment works. Nothing says “we aren’t ready for you” like a key fob or software login that doesn’t have access yet.
- Consider ordering business cards that will be ready for them on their first day.
These small gestures will make the transfer feel welcomed from the get-go.
Make them Feel at Home
For in-office employees, it can be jarring to work in a brand-new space. Luckily, since your transfer is already integrated with the company, it’s a bit easier to bridge that gap.
To start, ask someone to be the official greeter. On the employee’s first day, the greeter will meet them when they arrive and show them around the office. Knowing where everything is, including their workspace, the break room, coffee, and restrooms, will make them feel more at ease.
It’s also smart to plan out their first several days on the new job. Giving them a schedule that covers each day over the next week or so will provide direction as they get accustomed to their new role.
Introduce Them to Your Team
It’s important for transfers to build familiarity with the people around them. However, it can get overwhelming to introduce them to too many people at once.
First, make sure that they know who they report to. Then, you can introduce them to the key leads of other departments. After that, if everyone’s in one geographic area, consider having a group lunch with coworkers from the department.
Ice-breaker games that don’t put the new employee on the spot can help them remember people’s names and roles. You can ask your employees to each say something interesting about themselves, which can help the transfer remember who everyone is.
Also, explain how the employee can contact anyone they need to. Show them how the phones work and where the office directory can be found.
Give Thorough Training
Even if the transfer has the same exact job as at their old workplace, don’t assume the other branch did everything the same as yours. It can be tricky for a transfer to figure out your software, equipment, or workflows, the same as it would be with a new employee.
Make them feel fully equipped by providing training. Not only will they be as prepared for the job as possible, but you’ll also learn what your new employee does and doesn’t know.
As training goes along, check in with the employee to find out how they’re doing. You can ask them if the training is covering anything they’re unfamiliar with. If they seem like they’re already up to speed, you can always expedite the training so they can start working sooner.
